SNAPCHAT REMOVES COSMO AFTER DARK CHANNEL AFTER UPROAR

Update: SnapChat has removed “Cosmo After Dark.” Some call it a win, which it is, but in all likelihood, we’ve only kicked the can down the road a little longer. Parents – please utilize resources like “Bark” to continue to monitor your students online use. I personally still do not support the use of SnapChat for teens.

SnapChat has a new feature called “Cosmos After Dark” it is self described as “is an X-rated weekly edition that goes live every Friday at 6 p.m. and is exclusively dedicated to all things _____ and ______.” You can fill in the blanks.

Parents/Students/Leaders please read and react to this article but be warned it has the actual screen shots of the advertising for the program. (Link Below)

Granted this site is aimed for adults but unfortunately many youth lied about their age when they register and so it will be available to many of them.  Also the vast majority of students in our ministry use SnapChat daily.  It is my strong recommendation that they or you delete it from their phones immediately and/or vigilantly monitor their use.  While I realize it’s not the only way students can access X-rated material on their phones, SnapChat is normalizing the use of pornography and we CAN NOT knowingly support it.  Parents I encourage you to become more involved in stopping porn by making a stand against SnapChat making porn available to a site that mainly youth  and children use. At the bottom of the article there is a good resource (Bark) for monitoring all social media and text messages.

Will your kids be mad at you? Probably. That’s just part of being a parent and not their friend. Remember the question is not only do you trust your child, but do you also trust companies like SnapChat?

Sorry for the direct nature of this post but I feel strongly and know the detrimental impact that pornography can have on students and adults alike.

Again be warned. While this article is appropriate, it is not for the faint of heart.
